Well, butter my biscuits! Michael and Madison talk about cliché phrases that are unhelpful or hurtful. Some phrases are often thought to be direct quotes from scripture when they’re nowhere to be found in the Bible! Some phrases can even be dismissive of our loved ones, and the words we use matter.
Scripture read in this episode (in the order it appears) :
- 1 Corinthians 10:13
- John 16:33
- Matthew 11:28-30
- 1 Timothy 6:10
- Proverbs 3:5-6
- Jeremiah 17:9
- Romans 8:28
Before using similar phrases in the future, you may want to ask yourself these questions: Am I really listening? Silence and being present speaks louder than words. Is it about comforting them or filling the silence? It’s okay to not know what to say. Does this acknowledge their pain or try to explain it away? A simple “I’m sorry you’re going through this” can be more effective than a cliché.
