Featuring Son of Spy Pilot Francis Gary Powers

You won’t want to miss the Classics program in May. We are privileged to have Gary Powers, Jr., speak about the Cold War and specifically about his father, Francis Gary Powers, who was shot down in 1960 while flying a secret CIA spying mission over the Soviet Union. His father was captured by the Soviets and held in a Soviet prison for 21 months.

Gary is an author, historian, and frequent speaker. He will discuss the U-2 incident and what it was like to be a consultant on Steven Spielberg’s 2015 Cold War thriller, Bridge of Spies. The movie depicts the eventual exchange of Gary’s father for the Soviet spy Rudolph Abel in 1962.

You might want to watch this movie before our program to give you some background of these events. Gary will give us a glimpse into what it was like growing up in the shadow of a famous Cold War figure, and his search for truth after his father’s 1977 death in a helicopter.
